i LOVE Daniel.
+ note the ages of these rulers... very young +
DANIEL 1:1
"In the third year of the reign of Jehoiakim king of Judah, Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon came to Jerusalem and besieged it."
SETTING 605 BC at the height of Babylon's fame and fortune
BABYLON (
Baghdad. Her name was once Babylon. She is the city that is parallel to that of our western culture today; Hollywood or Las Vegas. A city full of idols and religion. People worshipping each other, or other
God's like Scientology! Mansions and cars, expensive educations, entertainment, the famous, and most successful. Babylons' fortress was filled with palaces, treasures, statues, temples, shrines, and the famous Tower of Babel. It was full of the most elite, rich, and intellectual. Babylon is a kingdom of magicians, enchanters, myths, legends, astrologers.
The are people who want to compete with God, rather than to serve God. They say to themselves, "
I am, and there is none besides me (Isaiah 47:8 & 10)"
I wrote down a few notes that one of my pastors (Chris Brown of Northcoast in Vista,CA) mentioned a few years ago in a sermon he did on Daniel. He compared the Babylon empire to God:
This is everything I've obtained vs. Every good and perfect gift comes from above
Concerned about me vs. Consider others better than yourself
Love those who love you vs. That's not love, even pagans do that
Do whatever you want vs. Deny yourself and follow me
Get as much and as fast as you can vs. Give all that you can
Store up treasures for yourself vs. Store up treasures in Heaven.
MAIN CHARACTERSJehoiakim - Known as Eliakim, then changed his name when he became King of Judah for eleven years (609 BC - 598 BC) at the age of 25! Preceded by his
younger brother Jehoahaz. He originally ruled the Egyptians until 605 BC when they were defeated by the Babylonians. Jehoiakim changed allegiance and paid tribute to Nebuchadnezzar II in Babylon then ceased after 3 years and went back to the Egyptians which resulted in the seige and fall of Jerusalem of 597 BC. He died in his mid-thirties. (

Nebuchadnezzar II - King of Babylon. Known as the greatest ruler of the Neo-Babylonian period. He captured Jerusalem in 597 BC, destroyed the city and temple, and deported many of the prominent and noble Israelites from Judah into Babylon. He was known for his prophetic dreams, which Daniel interpreted. In Daniel chapter 2, he has a prophetic dream of the rise and fall of world powers that began with the his reign up to the coming of the Messiah. (

Daniel - Young Jewish boy of Judah held captive by the Babylonians. Full of integrity and never compromised his faith for pagan kings. Daniel was the only one who could interpret King Nebuchadnezzar's dreams, through visions that God gave to him. He rose to the top quickly as prime minister, and many Babylonians resented his success. (source: NIV Student Bible)
DANIEL 1:2
"And the Lord delivered Johoiakim king of Judah into his hand, along with some of the articles from the temple of God. These he carried off to the temple of his god in Babylonia and put in the treasure house of his god."
King Nebuchadnezzar desecrates all of the sacred articles from the house of God by displaying it all in a pagan temple. That is like taking the cross of Jesus Christ and placing it in a Mormon temple.
Isaiah prophesied this day, "The time will surely come when everything in your palace , and all that your fathers have stored up until this day, will be carried off to Babylon. Nothing will be left, says the Lord. And some of your descendants, your own flesh and blood who will be born to you, will be taken away, and they will become eunuchs in the palace of the king of Babylon."
DANIEL 1:3
"Then the king ordered Ashpenaz, chief of his court officials, to bring in some of the Israelites from the royal family and the nobility -- "
RIGHT: Map of the Empire of Babylon. (source) Observe the locations of Jerusalem and Babylon (light blue arrow), the two cities are about 900 miles. This is how far Daniel and his friends went... possibly by feet or on camel back. (Thank God for cars now days) They were kidnapped by the Babylonian army and held captive in Babylon. Where they would learn the language and literature of the Babylonians.
I could not imagine being kidnapped in my own home and being taken away from my family and friends. When I was fifteen, I was a sophomore in high school, loving life on a small island and hoping to never move away. These are the days of teenage hood consisting of peer pressure, temptation, sin, rebellion, self-consciousness, admiration, lust, desire, and belonging. We are healthy and smart with great potential and success. We are on the verge of learning, and everything that we are taught is the foundation of our knowledge. I remember learning about Evolution, and wasn't sure how anyone could ever believe the Big Bang Theory. Now I imagine Daniel in Babylon being taught myths and sorcery, astronomy, and the divinity of Babylonian gods. He must have thought it was all bogus! I immediately close the doors to Jehovah Witnesses and Mormons talking about their religion at my doorstep because I know what I believe in and can't stand their persuasions and evidence that they have on their religion. (no offense, they probably feel the same towards Christians) I would be so afraid to be anywhere near pagan rituals and anything to do with idols and other gods. Imagine being a Christian and being held captive in a foreign country, being taught the Koran and having to become Muslim. That is probably exactly how Daniel felt, in misery and devastation.
Maybe when he reached the city of Babylon, he was intrigued? There must have been some sort of "wow" to all the riches that illuminated that city. Like coming from Hawaii and going to Las Vegas. Or growing up in the country and then going to Paris. Culture shock.
What kind of person is Daniel? King Nebuchadnezzar orders for men that fit this description:
"Israelites from the royal family and the nobility - young men without physical defect, showing aptitude for every kind of learning, well informed, quick to understand, and qualified to serve in the king's palace." DANIEL 1:4
without physical defect = no disability / handsome = physically attractive / showing aptitude of every kind of learning = intelligent and capable in every subject / well informed = incredibly knowledgeable / quick to understand = that's self-explanatory / qualified to serve in the king's palace = perhaps fit like a soldier. //
DANIEL 1:5
"The king assigned them a daily amount of food and wine from the king's table. They were to be trained for three years, and after that they were to enter the king's services."
Daniel is 'assigned' a daily amount of food and wine... probably because they took one look at him and thought that he needed more meat on his body! Like when football players have to put on meat and muscle so they can meet weight regulations. But they were given food and wine from the king's table! This was food for the royalty... food of great quality and richness. No spam or hot dogs!
DANIEL 1:6-7
"Among these were some from Judah: Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and azariah. The chief official gave them new names: to Daniel, the name Belteshazzar; to Hananiah, Shadrach; to Mischael, Meshach; and to Azariah, Abednego."
Their names are changed when they arrive in Babylon. 'Assigning new names was a common court practice in the ancient world. Its blatant intention was to change the entire identity of the bearer until the life matched the title. The new name marked new ownership and was meant to hail a new destiny. God originated the concept. We see the practice of renaming in Scripture as early as Genesis when He changed Abram's name to Abraham.' (moore)
I named my daughter Evangeline because of its meaning. Its true that when I named her, I prayed that when she became a woman, her name would be who she was. Her name means 'Bearer of good news' and also 'like an angel.' Her middle name is Rocky, after her fathers stage name; who he was known as. I hope that one day Evangeline will be that bearer of good news, spreading the gospel to the lost, and continuing in the ministry that her father walked. Having a name is having an identity. Who we belong to. Just as our last names are and is changed once we're married. Jesus Christ had the name above all names! It is a name that all will bow down to, a name that we call in times of trouble, that we praise, and worship. It is a holy name. Even as we call ourselves followers of Christ... we are CHRISTians! It means so much more than what kind of music + life + church we go to. The meaning behind the names of Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah are pretty intense. Their Hebrew names have a reference to God, and their Babylonian names contained a reference to the false gods of Babylonia.
Daniel "God is Judge" > Belteshazzar "May Bel (a God of Babylonia) protect his life"
Hananiah "Yaweh is gracious" > Shadrach "Under command of Aku the moon God"
Mishael "Who is like God" > Meshach "Who is like Aku"
Azariah "Whom God will help" > Abednego "Servant of Nebo"
Daniel must have been furious at his new idolatrous name. I wouldn't want to be named Abednego, servant of a god I don't want to serve. I wonder if Daniel and his friends still called each other by their hebrew names when they were in Babylon.
DANIEL 1:8
"Daniel resolved not to defile himself with the roayl food and wine, and he asked the chief official for permission not to defile himself this way."
